In days gone by, the Gaels had their own special way to celebrate the New Year, or Oidhche Challainn which involved the reciting of a New Years Verse, or Duan Callainn, and the banishing of evil with the use of a caisean, a stick wrapped in sheepskin and rags. Today however, in the Highlands and Islands, New Year is celebrated in much the same way as the rest of Scotland, with Ceilidhs and ‘first footing.’
We asked you to to tell us how you celebrate the coming of the New Year.
And the winners were Calum Macaulay, Glasgow & Christine Janet Muir who both won a digital camera, MP3 Player, computer accessories and a copy of ‘An Leabhar Mòr’ (‘The Great Book of Gaelic’).
