First of all, a big thanks for selecting my entry as a winning one! What a great surprise! I'm looking forward to reading the translation...
- I was over the moon to have received the good news of winning the tickets! But I'd only just started a new job - and here was me asking for a day off already!
- On receiving the news, I asked mum if she wanted to go - seeing as she's is a big Runrig fan - she couldn't believe her luck as she'd been trying to buy tickets!
- Bit of a nightmare trying to organise travel detals and find accommodation, so we decided to camp and go by ferry as plane was FAR TOO expensive!
- After hearing the weather forecast the night before going up, mum called - "Have another look for a hotel!" We managed to get a cancellation at the Cabarfeidh (it wasn't cheap either!)- Still mother said to forget the tent nd sleeping bags and to just book it.
- Got picked up on Friday at 7.30am for the drive up to Ullapool.
- Arrived at the ferry terminal with a couple of hours to spare - Ferry delayed by about an hour but we arrived in Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis about 8pm.
- Got some directions then walked up to the hotel - bit of a trek but the rain kept off till we got to the hotel, then the heavens opened!
- A bit too wet to go back out, so stayed within the warm confines of the hotel until Saturday (our thoughts were with those camping out in the rain!)
- After breakfast and sitting across from a member of Runrig we went to explore the Lews Castle Grounds and Stornoway town centre (Lews Castle is very much like Birkwood Castle in Lesmahagow!) and chatted with some locals
- In the afternoon we went to Tong Highland Games where I won a coconut and met some fellow students from uni!
- Back to the hotel to get changed then went to queue for the concert.
- The concert venue wasn't long in filling up, and the bar staff couldn't cope with the surge of customers - Met a few people I knew in the queue, and as soon as Runrig started, the Main stage tent filled up and was rocking for the rest of the evening. A great night of entertainment.
- Back to the hotel for a nightcap till about 1am
- Sunday breakfast with Runrig at the table next to us - mum was in her element!
- Checked out the hotel, left our bags and took a walk round the golf course before heading back to the hotel for a drink whilst waiting for the ferry
- Runrig were leaving the hotel about the same time as us, and mum swithered about getting an autograph and I ended up having to sort it out for her!
- On the ferry back there was some sort of rescue exercise which passed some time!
- On the drive back home, mum was still pretty much star struck!
A great experience all round. While I was there, I listened to the views of some locals on their use of Gaelic, and all of them said they would benefit enormously from having BBC Alba on Freeview. I guess in Glasgow we take TV for granted, but on the islands, Gaelic medium broadcasting I can now see is considered extremely important.
