Much of Scotland can be reached through a comprehensive transport network which threads through its towns and communities. And despite the mountainous and loch-strewn landscape of the Highlands and other parts of Scotland, you can more often than not reach your destination via a range of transport options which stretch from the far north to the Borders. By road, rail, sea and air, you have a choice of companies who serve Scotland and connect us with the rest of the world, and there is no shortage of travel guides who will take you to some of the most beautiful and interesting places to be seen.

When it comes to the Highlands and Islands, it is not always as easy to reach your destination as it might be in southern Scotland. But between ferries and sea planes, there is almost always a way to take you there. On land, at sea, or even from the air, travel and explore the big country that is nearer than you think!

This Month’s Way to Go

If you want to explore the Gaelic heartlands, and some of the most beautiful places in Britain, one of the best ways to accomplish this is to follow The Gaelic Rings or Cearcaill na Gàidhlig. What they give you is a choice of routes which take you across the sea to the Hebrides, and which bring you closer to the enduring heritage of the Gaels. The Gaelic Rings journeys are based on Caledonian MacBrayne ferry routes, and you can read personal accounts of the routes as you travel, illuminating the land, people and heritage which surround you. The accounts were written by well-respected Scots who have a special understanding and knowledge of the history, culture and environment of the area. If you are looking for a way to Gaelic, the Rings are a good place to start.
