Culture
Gaelic culture is easily confused with the Mod (Am Mòd), kilts, remote Highland glens, and countless other romanticised images. There’s no doubt that the Mod or Glen Coe (Gleann Comhan) are for some people important to their Gaelic identity, and that Gaelic culture like any other culture does at times dig deep into its past to inform its future. But to leave Gaelic culture there hanging as a jumble of stereotypes and single strands would be to completely lose out on the rich and diverse nature of Gaelic culture.
Modern Gaelic culture is dynamic and challenging, and is in many ways a global culture. Gaelic is embracing the modern, global world, and adding its own flavour to that world (saoghal). Ask a Gaelic speaker what their culture is, and you are likely to get the same slippery set of answers that a speaker of any other language would give you. Some might point to what they do with their day (latha), some might highlight the arts (na h-ealain), some might open a bible (bìoball), some might switch on their computer (coimpiutair), or most likely they would come up with their own unique set of answers. One person’s Gaelic culture list might include: crofting, Gaelic punk, modern house designs based on traditional Highland housing, Fifi and the Flowertots in Gaelic, shinty, regional politics, Harris Tweed and the PlayStation 3. Another’s would be totally different.
Discover Gaelic culture, and change your outlook. It’s that simple – Tha e cho sìmplidh sin.
