Have a look at what Joy Dunlop thought of the first album from Catriona Watt, Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2007
The arrival of Catriona Watt's first CD has been much anticipated since she won the prestigious title of Young Traditional Musician of the Year 2007 and at last, it's here!
'Cadal Cuain' was released at the end of last year and certainly demonstrates just how deserving the young Lewis singer was of her title.
It is an extremely musical performance and her sensitivity and understanding of the songs is obvious in every track. Catriona's voice is strong yet warm and she uses it to full effect in songs such as 'Ailean Duinn' and 'An t-Aingeal Diona.'
With artistic accompaniment which is never intrusive, Catriona sings an interesting mix of working songs including 'A Bhean Eudach' and 'Nan Tigeadh tu idir,' as well as a song in the traditional style, 'Cadal Cuain.'
All of the tracks on this album are impressive, but the highlight for me was 'Oran Dealachaidh' which she sings with her grandmother their voices so similar, you can hardly tell them apart!
It is not often you find an album which grabs your attention from start to finish, but indeed this is what we have in 'Cadal Cuain.'
If this album is a sign of what's to come from Catriona Watt, I have no doubt that she is in for big success and that it certainly won't be long in coming!
