I was 8 years old when I left Scotland but have never forgotten my heritage. From the moment I heard Gaelic song I was enchanted. I knew it was for me and began learning to speak the language. I have never looked back only forward. 'Suas leis a' Ghaidhlig!'

Diane, Well done! Where in the world did you go, and have you found any Gaelic speakers there? How did you go about learning our language?

Tapadh leibh, Iain. I came to Queensland, Australia where there is an abundance of sunshine which is lovely most of the time. I am very fortunate to have a friend who is a native speaker of the language. When I became serious about learning the language I decided to give the distance learning classes a try through Sabhal Mòr Ostaig. It has been hard work but I like the fact that you are assessed and that the expectations are high. I find the thought of the weekly phone call a great incentive to do the work and make a good job of it. Do you have any Gaelic?

I was interested to see that you had undertaken a distance learning class through SMO. I am planning to take one of the weeklong classes next year when I go home for a visit. I am also considering taking a distance class once I retire at the end of this year.
