Glasgow Gaelic Meetup
About Us
Founded in July 2009, Glasgow's Gaelic Meetup is now a grassroots voluntary group, run by learners of Gaelic, for learners of Gaelic and speakers of Gaelic! We are free to join, although some of our organised events do require a nominal donation.
We started up as a place to meet and speak Gaelic at a time when all the Gaelic lessons and courses had come to an end and it was proving difficult to remember everything we'd learnt! This group helps to keep the language alive between classes and we get to meet a lot of people with a common interest.
In June 2010, we set ourselves up with a constitution and have a Leadership Team who help steer the group ensuring we meet our overall aims and objectives. We are here to benefit Glasgow and the surrounding area and provide learners of Gaelic with opportunities to keep learning the beautiful language!
In May 2011, we established 'Gaelic Awareness Month' in Glasgow following an inspired discussion on Facebook with one of Glasgow's keen Gaelic learners. The first in Scotland and championed by a similar initiative in Nova Scotia and the USA.
Opportunities
On the 1st Wednesday of the month: We meet in Sutherland's Bar of the Argyll Hotel in the West End. This is how we started up!
On the 3rd Wednesday of the month: Glasgow's Gaelic Pub Quiz at the Park Bar in the West End. In May 2010 we started a monthly Pub Quiz (Farpais-Cheist Taigh Seinnse) in collaboration with Iomairt Gàidhlig Ghlaschu. The quizzes have been very enjoyable for all - a mix of Gaelic learners and Gaelic speakers - and the night is growing from strength to strength. More details on the Iomairt Gàidhlig Ghlaschu website.
On the last Wednesday of the month: Glasgow's Gaelic Conversation Classes. These are tutor-led classes aimed at increasing learner fluency in speaking and practicing Gaelic.
On the last Wednesday of the month: Gaelic Lessons for Complete Beginners - an ideal opportunity for people with no knowledge of Gaelic to get a taster and find out more about the Gaelic language and culture
Starting in May 2011, Gaelic Conversation by Skype will begin, opening up the opportunities for you to use your Gaelic from the comfort of your home!
We also organise additional events on so to be kept updated, please sign up and you'll be sent invitations to join as they come about. Past examples include a day-trip to Arran to learn Gaelic, a trip to Gaelic Day at the Scottish Parliament, and visits to the Theatre and Ceol is Craic - Glasgow's Gaelic night club.
Past Achievements
We ran the pilot project 'Glasgow's Gaelic Conversation Classes' between September 2010 and March 2011 and these classes continue to run.
In October 2010, we helped Lesmahagow Development Trust to pioneer Gaelic lessons in Lesmahagow which brought Gaelic back to the town after more than 600 years!
Our members are:
- Interested in Gaelic
- Curious about learning Gaelic
- Learning Gaelic (at home, distant learning, at uni/college)
