CHARITY AUCTION IN AID OF MÒD AND ROTARY LOCAL CHARITIES (31.8.10)
The local organising committee of the Royal National Mòd and the Rotary have joined forces to organise an auction to raise funds for the Mòd and Rotary local charities.
The auction will take place on Saturday 4th September at the Weigh Inn, Thurso starting at 7:30pm with the auction kicking off at 800pm.
Local Mòd singers will also provide some entertainment for the evening with a variety of Gaelic tunes.
Auctioneer for the evening is Iain Thomson, formerly of Thurso Auction Mart who will taking on the bidding wars for over 50 lots ranging from dinner for two, fishing for 10, to hairdressing vouchers and even a bit of slave labour thrown in.
Carol-Anne Mackay, Event Support Officer to the Local Organising Committee of Mòd Ghallaibh 2010 said “We have been overwhelmed by the generosity of the local shops, companies and individuals for donating such a wide range of lots for this auction. We’d like to thank everyone who has kindly donated and also thank the Rotary for their help in organising this event.
“There are far too many donations to list in full so I would suggest you come along to see for yourself the range of goods that you can bid for and grab yourself a bargain. All monies will support the fundraising efforts for the Royal National Mòd and will also benefit local charities supported by the Rotary so make sure you bring your wallets.”

Gemma Fraser: Gaelic medium school is flying the flag for benefits of bilingual learning (31.8.10)

A SIDE from being able to offer milk and sugar in a cup of tea and ask someone how they are - "ciamar a tha thu?" - the only thing I took away from my foray into the Gaelic language 14 years ago was a frustration that I had to give up without ever achieving my goal of becoming fluent in the language.
Armed with only a phrase book and cassette tape 20 years out of date borrowed from the local library, it wasn't the best way to pick up a language that was all but extinct in my home town of Dumfries.
Things are a lot different now, though. While I'm not sure that schools in south-west Scotland will ever fully embrace Gaelic, schools in other parts of Scotland, including Edinburgh and Glasgow, have made massive commitments to teaching the language to children.
In the Capital, the Gaelic Medium Education (GME) unit in Tollcross Primary is bursting at the seams, with pupil numbers rising from 90 to 132 in the past five years.
It has become so popular, in fact, that the council is looking into creating a dedicated Gaelic school so it can reach out to even more children interested in taking up the language.
While that might sound like a sensible and practical solution to dealing with increased demand, the proposal has come under fire given the costs involved and the fact that the council has already closed seven schools in less than two years.
Again and again the question is asked: "Why spend vast amounts of money on a dying language?"
With only one per cent of Scots speaking the language, it's a valid point, but the Scottish Government is firmly behind preserving this part of our heritage, while supporters of the language are increasingly pointing towards the general educational benefits of being bilingual.
A glowing HMIE report has just highlighted the great academic success of children at Tollcross Primary, where "a significant proportion achieve national levels in English, Gaelic and mathematics earlier than might normally be expected". It adds: "Children learning through the medium of Gaelic progress very well."
Antonella Sorace, professor of developmental linguistics at Edinburgh University and director of the new information service Bilingualism Matters, says: "The results are consistent with research on child bilingualism, which shows that growing up with two languages brings a range of benefits to children.

Blueprint for city Gaelic 'hub' close to completion (31.8.10)
PLANS for a Gaelic business and cultural centre in Inverness are advancing, with a formal planning application due to be submitted by the end of the year.
Architects are working on detailed plans for the building, which will be located in an empty field beside the city's only Gaelic primary school at Culduthel, and will bring all the Gaelic organisations under one roof, provide a pre-school facility and cultural centre.
Roy Pederson, chairman of the project's steering group, explained the idea emerged from discussions held by a group hoping to establish Gaelic childcare for children up to the age of three at Bun-sgoil Ghàidhlig Inbhir Nis. At present, the school, which opened two years ago, caters for children from the age of three upwards.
However, the demand for Gaelic medium education is growing and. over the summer holidays, two extra classrooms were added. The school roll this year stands at 137 pupils - 11 more than last year - and the nursery roll stands at 60.
"At the rate of growth, it is going to be full again soon in the next two or so years," Mr Pederson said.
Under the plans, pre-school education will be taken out of the primary school, although remain strongly linked, and transferred to the new hub, thus freeing up space in the school.
The various Gaelic organisations in Inverness, which have also been involved in the project's development, will be brought under one roof.
"The organisations in Inverness are scattered all over the place, some in rather inadequate accommodation," Mr Pederson said.
This would be a more cost-effective way of housing the organisations, enabling them to better communicate with each other, he added.
"The good news on that is that all the Gaelic organisations in the town are supportive and most of them are interested in relocating to the new building."
This would include the Scottish Government quango Bòrd na Gàidhlig, based at Stoneyfield Business Park, the Gaelic development charity Comunn na Gàidhlig, on Mitchell Lane, Fèisean nan Gàidheal, which supports the Gaelic arts, and Cli Gaidhlig, the voice of Gaelice learners, both on Academy Street, and An Comunn Gàidhealach, currently based on Church Street. Organisations will share common facilities like a reception and boardroom.
The third element is a cultural centre, a space for the Gaelic community to use. This could incorporate a small cafe and shop, selling, for example, Gaelic music.
"It will primarily be a place for the community to meet and Gaelic-related events, exhibitions and the likes," said Mr Pederson, who is also a ward councillor for Inverness South.
"There is also a fourth dimension to this. It is putting Inverness on the map as regards Gaelic culture."
Mr Pederson also think there could be a tourism spin-off.
Consultants have already carried out a feasibility study, paid for by Bòrd na Gàidhlig, and a planning application is due to be submitted before the end of the year.
Work is also on-going to prepare a funding package for the project.
"There are challenges, but we are hopeful will be able to pull a viable funding package together," Mr Pederson said.
The Gaelic-hub will comprise a small part of the site, while the remainder of the field will be turned into a public park.

Funding boost for Gaelic film-makers
First Minister Alex Salmond has announced funding to help train aspiring Gaelic film-makers.
A total of £10,000 from the Scottish Government and £15,000 from Bòrd na Gàidhlig will support skills training for entrants to the Gaelic-language short-film competition, FilmG.

Young Gaels Take First Steps Towards Career Ladder
Twenty four students are currently getting their first experience of the workplace, as they participate in this year’s Comunn na Gàidhlig Students Work Placement Scheme.
Funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Bòrd na Gàidhlig, Highland Council and Comhairle nan Eilean Siar, the scheme gives young people the opportunity to spend the summer months sampling a career of their choice in Gaelic, building important skills, experience and contacts for the young peoples’ futures. The Scheme is also welcomed by Gaelic employers who are given access to the enthusiasm and commitment of young Gaels eager to take forward their futures using Gaelic.
Amongst the organisations participating in this year’s scheme are Clì Gàidhlig, An Comunn Gàidhealach, Sabhal Mòr Ostaig, The Scottish Parliament, Comunn Eachdraidh Bharbahis is Bru, Fèisean nan Gàidheal, Glasgow University and Urras Leabhraichean nan Eilean.
