BÒRD NA GÀIDHLIG WELCOMES GAELIC VERSION OF THE GLASGOW 2014 IDENTITY
Bòrd na Gàidhlig, the principal public body promoting and developing Gaelic, has welcomed the announcement by the Organising Committee for the 2014 Commonwealth Games that it is to use a Gaelic version of the official logo for the Games. This is the first time permission for such a development of the brand has been granted.
Welcoming the announcement, Bòrd Cathraiche (Chair) Arthur Cormack said: “Bòrd na Gàidhlig welcomes the Gaelic version of the logo for the 2014 Commonwealth Games and we have been happy to work with the Glaschu 2014 team in helping them develop their identity. Given the unique importance of Gaelic to Scotland and the many Scots in the diaspora throughout the Commonwealth, we believe it should be seen, heard and spoken as widely as possible. Given the worldwide interest there will be in the Games when they take place in Glasgow, a city with a large number of Gaelic speakers, we believe they offer an exciting opportunity for Gaelic to be seen and, we hope, heard and appreciated in an international setting. We hope this is just the start; we wish the Games well and look forward to working further with Glaschu 2014 to enhance the status of Gaelic within this hugely significant event.

Recognition on the way for Gaelic Community and Business of the Year
Nominations are now being sought for the community and business which have done most towards the growth and revitalisation of the Gaelic language over the past year.
The competitions, being launched by Comunn na Gàidhlig and in conjunction with Highlands and Islands Enterprise, come with cash prizes. The winners in both categories will receive £3,000, runners-up will receive £1,500 and third place nominations will each get £500.
Gleus - Gaelic Community of the Year
Nominations for ‘Gleus’, the Gaelic Community of the Year should highlight communities which can demonstrate the use of Gaelic as a spoken language, high visibility of the language in the community, frequency of ‘Gàidhealach’ (Gaelic cultural) social events, the availability of Gaelic education and childcare and the use of Gaelic amongst young people, or those who are making strong progress towards the above.
Entries for Gleus, The Community of the Year competition, may be made by any recognised and clearly defined community throughout the Highlands and Islands. There are no strict limits to the size of the community, be it a township, village or collection of townships or villages as long as the area can be defined as having a sense of belonging to a common community.
Gnìomh – Gaelic Business of the Year
Gnìomh – The Gaelic Business of the Year award will go to the businesses that can best demonstrate a strong use of Gaelic among staff, and with customers, which has a high level of visibility of the language within the company and which uses Gaelic in branding/marketing of the company or its products. Again, businesses making strong progress towards these objectives could be eligible.
Enties for Gniomh, The Gaelic Business of the Year is open any recognised commercial enterprise operating as a business. It should be operating on a stand-alone basis rather than as part of a wider Group and should not be part of the operation of local authorities, enterprise companies or organisations funded by public agencies.
Donald MacNeill, Chief Executive of Comunn na Gaidhlig, said: “We know there are communities and businesses out there who are making strong efforts to help revitalise Gaelic, and who are playing their part in the overall development effort. We are delighted to be able to run these competitions to be able to reward them in some small way. Not only does this benefit the communities and businesses themselves, but by considering what they have done, we can learn lessons that may be applicable elsewhere.”
Alasdair Macleod, Gaelic Development Officer with Highlands Enterprise said, “HIE has a strong focus on businesses and communities developing themselves and realising new opportunities through the use of Gaelic. Not least because many of the communities where Gaelic is strongest are those which face some of the greatest development challenges. Success is the best persuader, and we are convinced that highlighting achievements here will spur others on.”

The entries will be considered by a panel of judges made up of representatives from Highlands and Islands Enterprise, Bòrd na Gàidhlig and Comunn na Gàidhlig and the awards will be made at an event in Summer 2010.
The Gaelic Community of the Year and Gaelic Business of the Year awards are funded by Highlands and Islands Enterprise and administered by Comunn na Gaidhlig.

Glasgow 2014 Games logo revealed (08/3/10)
The logo for the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has been unveiled in English and Gaelic.
The launch marks the start of the build-up to the Games as well as the drive to raise up top £80m of sponsorship money.
After a worldwide search, the successful brand came from the Glasgow design agency Marque.
The logo has been based on three principles of sport - time, data, and measurement.
There is also a Gaelic version, the first time a Games logo has been produced in a language other than English.
The logo, which has cost £95,000 to produce, will be offered exclusively to companies in return for sponsorship.
This is the first major launch for the Glasgow Games, revealing the brand which will be identified with it for the next four years.
Chief executive of the Glasgow 2014 organising committee John Scott said: "Today is a big milestone for everyone involved in the planning for Glasgow 2014, as the unveiling of the new brand symbolises the start of a new and exciting journey towards the Games."
Deputy First Minister Nicola Sturgeon said: "I want the 2014 Games to be a great success and the Scottish government has been working hard to ensure that the entire country will benefit from the opportunities that this world-class event will bring to Scotland.
"The new brand is much more than a marketing logo.
"Over the next four years everyone will become familiar with this distinctive brand and begin to identify with it."

INVERNESS SELECTED TO HOST EUROPEAN SONG CONTEST (03/3/10)
Top European music acts and international media will flock to Inverness this November to engage in one of the most unique song competitions on the European cultural calender.
A cross-European board has selected Inverness in the Scottish Highlands to host the prestigious Liet International Song Competition 2010. Liet International is a song competition for European minority/lesser used languages. The aim of the competition is to facilitate the creation of interesting, contemporary new songs in minority languages and to offer artistes who sing in minority languages an international stage to perform those songs live. Liet International also acts as a platform to showcase the culture, languages and arts of the region hosting the event.
Liet International 2010 will be the 7th year the competition has been held. The event has previously been held in northern Sweden and Friesland, Netherlands. There are 11 acts in the final and they are, in the main, selected through collaboration with several partner organisations across Europe.
Inverness events firm Anam Communications will work in partnership with the arts development agency HI~Arts to deliver this unique and prestigious international event. HI~Arts' director Robert Livingston says “we are delighted to be able to bring this exciting event to Scotland for the first time. There will be a whole series of cultural events in the days leading up to the big night which is a great opportunity for us to showcase the best of Highland language, arts & culture.”
Anam Communications' Brian Ó hEadhra adds “we will soon be sending out the call across Europe for song submissions. Currently we are developing the website and plans for the whole event. There will be a huge media spotlight on Inverness during the events and there is a lot to prepare.”
Over the past two years Inverness has successfully hosted the Nòs Ùr Celtic & Scots languages song competition. As Inverness is hosting Liet International in 2010 it has been decided that anyone who was planning to enter Nòs Ùr this year now enter the larger Liet International competition.

MÒD 2010 WEBSITE LIVE(3/3/10)
A new website has gone live in the run up to the Royal National Mòd in October 2010.
Designed by David Bain, who lives in Fife but has Caithness connections, the website provides all the latest information on forthcoming events and local information for those planning to visit the area. Connor Williamson, based in Caithness, provided initial support for the website to gain experience in web design and then handed to David.
Carol-Anne Mackay, Events Support Office (Mòd Ghallaibh) said “We very much appreciate the work that Connor did in the initial designing of the website and also to David Bain – son-in-law of Frankie Murdoch (Mòd Ghallaibh 2010 Treasurer) – who has built on the original concept and got it into a position where it is now live. They have both done an excellent job and a lot of effort has gone in to creating such a valuable resource.”
“The website is for everyone – for the local community it is a chance to find out what will be happening over the coming months in the run-up to the Mòd while ensuring there is plenty of information for those who plan to visit the area. “
Raymond Bremner, Convenor of the local organising committee added “The Mòd is a fantastic opportunity to show those visiting what Caithness and North Sutherland has to offer. We have such a diverse community with many great cultures and backgrounds and it will be great to see the local community get behind the events leading up to the Mòd and, of course the Mòd itself.”
